The Italian Way of Gathering

There is something about an October wedding in Minnesota that lends itself to atmosphere.

The changing light, the cooler air, the beginning of longer evenings indoors. For this wedding in St. Paul, that mood became part of the inspiration: an Italian café imagined somewhere in the middle of Minnesota, with candlelight, deep reds, handwritten details, and the feeling of a long dinner shared with people you love.

The ceremony took place at Church of the Assumption before the evening continued at The Lowlands.

The Feeling of Home

The wedding was never meant to feel overly formal. Instead, it was warm, intimate, and a little cinematic.

White was the foundation, with bright and dark reds providing contrast. Candelabras filled the tables, menus were handwritten, and the seating chart was designed to look like the menu of an Italian café. Downstairs at The Lowlands, the atmosphere shifted toward something closer to a late-night jazz club.

The details were thoughtful without feeling overly designed.

Her sister Maria embroidered each guest’s name onto their napkin, replacing traditional place cards. The groom handwritten the menus in honor of his grandmother. Even the custom LED jazz club sign felt less like decoration and more like part of the world they had created for the evening.

The Moments That Matter

When we asked what photographs she was most looking forward to, the bride didn’t mention the dress, the flowers, or the tables.

She wanted the in-between moments.

The way she and Evan interacted when nobody was directing them. The small exchanges with family and friends. Photographs where you could see the love and happiness rather than simply see that a wedding was taking place.

That became the thread running through the day.

Getting dressed with her sister. Dancing with her father to Dancing Queen, a song they have always shared. The best man unexpectedly taking over the dance floor with the band.

These moments don’t need much styling. Their meaning is already there.

A Wedding That Felt Like Them

Even the proposal had been centered around family. After deciding to move back to Minnesota, Evan surprised her with a weekend home from Chicago and proposed on Lake Minnetonka. They spent the evening celebrating with their parents, siblings, grandmothers, nieces, and nephew.

It made sense that family would remain at the center of the wedding.

And perhaps that is what made the Italian-café idea work so well. It wasn’t simply an aesthetic. It was a feeling: a long table, good food, familiar people, music, and nowhere else you needed to be.

The best weddings, after all, aren’t the ones where everything goes exactly according to plan.

They’re the ones where, somewhere along the way, everyone forgets about the plan.
