Charleston Wedding
A Wedding She Never Planned
Some weddings begin with a very clear idea of what they should look like. Others take shape more slowly, through the places, people, and traditions that matter most.
This Charleston wedding was the latter.
The bride had never imagined herself having a wedding at all. She had always thought she might be more of a courthouse girl. Instead, she and her family gathered in Charleston for an intimate celebration that brought together Southern hospitality, Chinese wedding tradition, and a setting that allowed both to feel entirely at home.
A Quiet Beginning
The day began at The Parsonage, where the couple got ready and their ceremony took place.
The bride’s vision was romantic without being overly formal: a strapless gown with a sweetheart neckline and an overskirt that added a little drama, set against a palette of green, dusty blue, and soft whites.
She wanted the details to feel vintage and romantic, but never as though they were competing with the setting.
That restraint carried through to the smaller elements. Signs she made herself were mounted on silver plates for an old-world feel. Escort cards were finished with handmade liners and personalized letters written for each guest. Even the table numbers had a story of their own, created from custom-designed playing cards.
Nothing felt purely decorative. The details gave the day a sense of authorship.
Charleston, in Between
There was also room for the photographs the bride had been looking forward to most: the first look and portraits in a vintage convertible.
Those moments offered something different from the ceremony and reception, a little movement, a little distance, and the feeling of being somewhere rather than simply attending a wedding.
It is often these parts of a wedding day that stay with us. Not because they are the most elaborate, but because they give the couple space to experience the day for themselves.
An Evening at Wild Common
Dinner took place at Wild Common, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Charleston, where the atmosphere became more intimate as the evening continued.
Candlelight, romantic florals, and a green and dusty-blue palette created a setting that felt considered but relaxed. The vintage-inspired cake, finished with cherries, continued the slightly nostalgic feeling without becoming overly themed.
But the most memorable part of the evening had nothing to do with the table.
During the reception, Empire Lion Dance surprised the guests with a traditional lion dance. The red and white lion moved through the room as guests gathered around, entertained and celebrating together.
It was both unexpected and deeply personal, a tribute to the bride’s Chinese heritage that became part of the celebration rather than a separate performance.
And perhaps that is what made it work so well. For a bride who never thought she would have a wedding, it became something much more meaningful than a day she had once imagined.
